Good news indeed. However, do be aware that in the early stages things can be a bit variable so don't be dejected it things slow down or it makes funny smells for a day or so. These are just signs that the biome is changing and different beasties are going through a phase that suits them to thrive. In due course the symbiosis of the yeasts and bacteria that you want will prevail and you will end up with a nice acid culture that will be robust and stable for years to come.

Yes cover the ingrediants with a lid but don't seal the jar. The starter when it is fermenting will make CO2 gas and it needs to escape somewhere.
