I shouldn't have been surprised that a sourdough community exists... :)

dan

After recently quitting work, I thought I'd try baking bread. But rather than buy yeast and a bread mix, I decided to try and make bread like they would have before they knew about yeast. If cavemen could do it, then so could I!

So, not knowing anything about "sourdough", or that it even existed, I mixed some flour and water on my windowsill and let it sit, hoping to catch some wild organisms.

After a few days, it started forming bubbles. So I fed it some more flour and water.

Eventually I had fair amount of this infected mixture, and it looked quite active, so I took 2 cups of it + salt + sugar and added flour until it formed a kneadable dough.

To my surprise, after about 8 hours the dough rose.

I baked it.

And ate it.

YUM!

Anyway, I did a bit of searching on the net to see if I could find out if other people do this.

To my surprise, I found whole communities devoted to "sourdough".

This shouldn't have surprised me, as making bread from scratch, from wild yeast/bacteria which I cultured myself was an immensely rewarding experience.

Now to read through the forums and find out what I've been missing out on!
