Hi
My starter has been resting in the fridge since the start of December in a sealed kilner. I took it out this morning to give it a feed and there was a grey water sitting on the top and the starter was greyish with a more normal yellowy colour underneath. I poured off the water and gave it a feed, it smelt quite strong but not in a bad way, should I use or bin it? Thanks

Hello Jacqui,
I would put it through a few feed and discard cycles and see how it freshens up. If it gets back to being active and looks and smells normal then it should be absolutely fine.
If it doesn't come good, then a week or ten days should get you to a stage of having a brand sparkler.
Good luck with your projects.

Thanks Farinam, I'll try a few feeds and see how it goes. Did you mean to chuck it if that doesn't work and start from scratch or just to keep feeding and discarding for 7-10 days until I use it? Thanks for you help

Hello Jacqui,
Yes, just keep on following the sort of procedure that SourDom gives. Hopefully, the acid present in your existing mix will give the good yeasts and bacteria a head start in getting a new one going. And after a few cycles it will all be 'new' anyway.
Good luck with your projects.

Thanks, I have kept feeding and discarding and it seems quite healthy and lively now
