After destroying my previous proofing box I've been having a few proofing problems, been spoilt by repeatable controlled conditions and forgotten some basic skills.
So I threw together a new box out of some leftover material from my shed. It's not pretty but an overnight test with some of my starters shows that it works fine, and that's all that matters to me.
The box is 500mm x 500mm x 300mm high, this will hold my starters, or my 3 loaf proofing dish, or 3 bannetons for final proof.
The box is heated by a single 40watt blue light globe, blue because it cuts down the infra red radiation. The temperature is controlled by a thermostat from a chicken egg incubator, it is adjustable for temperature and will hold temperature +/- 1/2 degree C. You can see the thermostat sensor on the roof of the box, and the round disc on the side of the box is the temperature adjustment.
Now hopefully I can get back to some decent loaves.

Bill ... you're too clever by half! What a lucky woman your wife is!
Clocks, bannetons, proofing boxes ... I'm sure there are more fabulous things you could show us!
I'm married to a physicist, and he hasn't got a handy bone in his body.

Oh now that's just beautiful. Sure puts my poor old 40 winks special to shame!
More! More! Bravo!
I love seeing the work of clever artistic folks!
Ditto!
Hi Bill,
That's a very nice proofing box that you put together. I am planning on
building one myself using a card board box, foam padding, a thermostat,
and a light source. Once I put mines together I hope to use it to start a
culture. The weather here is still a bit cold to start a culture. I cannot wait
to get my proof box built.

Thats a funny one Bill, since when did you bake any indecent loaves!
Your proofing box looks toasty! Great work!
