Novice Baker and Then Some

riverbaker

A friend of mine owns a little wine shop locally and had been getting bread from a baker some way off.  The baker didnt  deliver and since the business was a kind of hobby (though one he loved), the baker kept sometimes erratic hours causing my friend to become frustrated when he would go to pick up breads only to find the bakery closed.  During one such period I had experiemented with some French loaves at home and brought some to him to try. He loved it and immediately asked if I would bake for him on the two days that he knew his baker to be closed.  Over the next couple of months we worked out a formula that he liked and develped a couple more breads that he and his customers liked.  Suddenly I was baking.  I was reading what I could find, asking questions and learning every day in the kitchen.  I found that I loved it.  Now, seven months later I have a wholesale baking business that is growing every week.  I am still very much learning and hoping to eventually have enough going on in the kitchen that I can give up my other job.

Be careful not to turn it into work and keep it something you love.  If you'r lucky it will be baking at the commercial level.   I read once if you find a job you love you will never work a day in your life.

Best of luck,

That's great to be able to grow your avocation towards a vocation.  Good luck on expanding your business.

I will echo what the others said.

Mind, there are very real drawbacks to being a small businessman, which is why the other guy wasn't always there when he should have been. But if you love it, do it well, and attack it with passion I think you are doing the right thing.

Good luck, and I hope you feel free to ask any questions that might come up.

I'm still looking for that one love of my life that I can make even a semi-living at!  I wish you all the best in your new adventure!
