Left my starter sulking in the fridge for 4 days and on opening on my return it popped like it was gassy....perhaps I left it open too long after feeding before putting it in the fridge? Also a strange although not unpleasant smell, is this normal? Thanks

That is very normal. The pop is from the carbon dioxide produced which isnt bad it just means the yeast has been active. The new smell is also from the by products of the yeast and bacteria doing there thing. Give it a good feeding and all shoudl be fine.
Thanks, went ahead and used it anyway as it looked quite lively.....in the oven now and looking good!
Glad to hear it - you could end up with a very tasty loaf. Please let me know.
