MY HUBBY THREW OUT MY GRANDMOTHER'S STARTER!!!!!!!

My hubby did a VERY bad thing!!!!  When he was cleaning out the fridge the other day he threw out my starter. :jawdrop: I've been using my grandmother's starter for years with a lot of success.  Unfortunately, she never wrote down any of her recipes because she did things by taste and memory.  She passed away a long time age and I now have no starter and no recipe :(.  Would anyone care to share their starter recipe with me?  PLEASE!!!!!  I'm dying for a nice, warm, fresh loaf of sour dough!!!!!

Must be a hubby thang...coz mine has done it before too...he thought it was something gone bad. Luckily, I've 2 other back-up jars.

Dom's tute should help get you 'started' again. There are a couple more threads on people's experience on making their own starters around if you do a search. Sorry, my line is kinda cranky today.

Where in Southern Ontario are you? Sour Starters are very simple to make. If you were in Kingston, I could give you a cup of mine.

Is it Tammy or Dolly who sings that song, you know D-I-V-O-R-CE-EE ? all will be forgiven and the spirit of grandma will once again rest when you bake your first loaf. Until then,warn your husband that you may wake in the night sitting up with your head doing 360`s, shouting obscenities and projectile vomiting...hope you get a starter soon.........

Hi Kate,

I found this site when I started and thought about ordering some starter from them.  But being an a bit impatient and realizing that by the time I sent my envelope and waited for a reply I could have a starter going... I decided to start my own starter(s).  But if you are looking for a free starter with history you may want to give this 1847 starter a try.  They do ship to Canada.

If I were you, I would still start my own.  Generally any starter that you maintain for a while will take on the characteristics of the yeasts found on the Grain/flour that you use.  By any chance have you ever shared your starter with someone else who might still have some?
