Sourdough bread in spain?

In a few weeks we'll be in Spain for the holidays. I have to eat sourdough bread for medical reasons and normally bake my own.

Does anyone know if sourdough bread is available in Spain and if so, what is it called?

Hi there, Lisette

Sourdough bread is called 'pan de masa madre', but in order to give you proper directions it will be better to know your schedule. Will you be around Madrid or Barcelona? If you hit Madrid I can offer myself or any other member of our blog: Madrid Tiene Miga, to bake something for you. Also, you can drop me a line at javier(at)labakeria(dot)com with your approximate schedule so I can get back to you with a list of bakeries.

Barcelona has a wider selection of places baking real sourdough bread with no commercial yeast at all, but in Madrid we are really lacking that kind of product.

Thanks for your reply.

We will be in Pals for two weeks from 27th July, so Madrid and Barcelona are a bit far away. But now I know what sourdough is called in Spanish I know what to ask for.

Thanks

Or in Barcelona (1.5 hr drive too):

Panadería Baluard
