New guy from Ohio

Polo

As this was one of the sites that helped me along in my Sourdough quest, I thought it only right to post the results of my first two loaves. I initally found this site during an internet search for "wood fired oven construction" . Three months later with help from the members here and a couple of other sites I have started my sourdough journey. My scoring skills need "honed", but other than that I am very pleased.

A special thanks to matthew, who's oven thread brought me here.

Welcome Polo!  Fabulous looking oven, and stunning first loaves - love the crumb! and am very jealous (as I am with eveyone else's) of your woodfired oven - well done :o)

Won't you be freezing your butt off anytime soon baking outside in Ohio?  Is that what the extra construction around the outside of your oven is?  Extra insulation for winter bakes?

Thank you for the nice comments karniecoops. I am probably a bit backward in that I built the oven and then decided to take up bread baking. As it is, the oven is the cornerstone of an outdoor kitchen (obviously in progress).

I was also surprised at the success of my first loaves ( had bad dreams the night before of dough not rising, or burned loaves). I couldn't tell you how pleased I was when I saw the results.

The weather here in Ohio is on and off this time of year. I believe it was 35 F when I baked Saturday, but my kitchen is close by so I can dash bak in to keep warm. You are correct about the extra construction around the oven. It will look like a little house and the inside will be filled with fiber insulation and vermiculite to keep it warm for extended periods. I'll post some more photos as it progresses.

I hope to continue to learn from you all here. As long as you don't mind a beginner hanging around asking a bunch of questions. I have a lot to learn.

Very nice looking oven and welcome to the forum.  I love the look of the crumb.  Can I have a slice?  :-)  You are off to a good start the rest will come to you with time.  Ask all the questions you want, that is what the forum is for.

Exactly!  Ask away!  I learnt to make bread by using advice and recipes from the good folk on this website too.  If my first loaves looked as good as yours I'd be very happy too - my first ones would do well as constuction material in your oven ;o)
